Yesterday was my mom’s 92nd birthday, so even though my hand is still bothering me, I had to paint a little card for her. I chose as its subject these Spring flowers (tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, and grape hyacinths) because every time my husband and I have moved into a new house, Mom has come and planted these bulbs with me to help start my new garden. She taught me to appreciate the beauty of God’s creation and also inspired me to collect blue and white china. Mom’s glaucoma and macular degeneration have severely impaired her vision, so she can’t see her card very well at all. But painting this picture was partly for me, as I think back to memories of many wonderful moments shared together. I’m battling with trigger finger again, and not doing much painting these days. I thought of this one from a couple of years ago because here in Northern VA we’re seeing the last of the Snowdrops start to fade away as the Daffodils and Crocuses take center stage in the garden. But here’s a “last hurrah” to these sweet little blooms. Snowdrops are hearty little flowers that sometimes push through the ground as early as January. One of the first flowers to bloom each year, snowdrops symbolize new beginnings, hope, and rebirth. I don’t remember why I originally captioned this painting with this particular verse, but for any friends who are currently experiencing heartbreak, I pray that God’s nearness is your good, and that you experience the hope of the resurrection.
